The train rolled off and disappeared
Like a thought I couldn’t hold
A river of strangers
Moved toward the light
Through a passage dark and cold
I was a little ways ahead of them
Far enough to see
The ceiling drop without a warning
Like it was waiting there for me
And every few yards the tunnel narrowed
Till you couldn’t stand upright
You had to lay down
In the dust and concrete
Just to keep moving toward the light
And I kept thinking
Doesn’t anybody see this?
Doesn’t anybody know?
How can something feel so broken
And everybody call it normal?
We came up from the underground
Through the ribs beneath the town
Everybody else kept moving on
Like nothing happened down below
I spent years trying to get here
Thought I’d finally know
But nobody saved me a seat
And I still wanna know
Where the tunnel goes
Why the tunnel goes
The room was full of half-baked stories
Coffee cups and cold food on the plates
People gathering
People leaving
Like arrivals and escapes
Miles had a map spread on the table
Pointing somewhere underneath
Said we’re standing right above a turn
Most people never see
And I realized
I hadn’t sat down
Not once since I’d arrived
Funny how you spend your whole life
Trying to survive
Then one day you finally make it
And there’s no place reserved inside
We came up from the underground
Through the ribs beneath the town
Everybody else kept moving on
Like nothing happened down below
I spent years trying to get here
Thought I’d finally know
But nobody saved me a seat
And I still wanna know
Where the tunnel goes
Why the tunnel goes
So I started pulling at a vent cover
Hidden in the wall
Trying to see the architecture
Trying to see it all
The things beneath the things beneath
The things they never show
The reasons why the hallway bends
The reason veins flow
That’s when I saw her
Standing by a doorway
Like she’d walked a thousand miles
She looked at me
The tunnel
The vent
And almost smiled
Like
You think that’s the story?
You think that’s the road?
You think surviving was the lesson?
You haven’t even reached the fold
We came up from the underground
Through the ribs beneath the town
Everybody else kept moving on
Like nothing happened down below
I spent years trying to get here
Thought I’d finally know
But nobody saved me a seat
And I still wanna know
Where the tunnel goes
Why the tunnel goes
Maybe the room ain’t the destination
Maybe the room ain’t home
Maybe all that’s waiting for us
Is another road unknown
I spent years trying to get here
And I still wanna know
Where the tunnel goes
Why the tunnel goes
I spent years trying to get here
And I still wanna know
Where the tunnel goes
Why the tunnel goes
Why the tunnel goes….
